A basic description of facilities providing for each level of care is as follows:

Active Adult Retirement Community (AARC): Apartments and Villa’s for purchase together with Hotel Leisure Services for the 55 plus market who are fully independent.

Independent Living (IL): Typically a serviced apartment building offering a restaurant whose residents do not need assistance with everyday tasks. This option is for purchase or rental.

Assisted Living Facility (ALF): An apartment or studio for rental whose residents, perhaps triggered by an 'event', need 'Assistance with Daily Living' (ADL) (i.e. bathing, dressing, toileting, preparing meals, taking medication etc.) but with an emphasis on prolonging independence.

Skilled Nursing (N): A single or double-bedded room whose residents need a significant amount of ADL and intensive nursing Assistance with emphasis on caring for patients with quite severe ageing issues such as Dementia.

Continuing Care Retirement Community (CCRC):  A large community offering a mix of care from fully independent living through to end of life care providing for the full continuum in one setting.
